For a couple of years now, I have been using a fly called the Wonder Bug as one of my "go to" flies, especially in low, clear water, though it also works in stained water conditions.
The fly was shown to me by a fly fishing friend from Red Lion, PA, named Ron Heuston. He is a very good tyer, rod builder, and hunter, as well as the driving force behind the Vibert Box RefrigeratorIncubator program at Muddy Creek TU, about which I have written in the past.
On a recent trip to AR with John Roach, the fly was a killer in tough conditions, to which John will attest.
It is a simple tie and incorporates peacock herl which so many effective flies use. I tie it in 14, 16, 18, and fish it under an indicator, dead drift, on 5x and 6x fluoro.
Pics and recipe follow:
Tie in black thread, wrap with .015 wire, tie in 6-8 mallard flank fibers about 3/4 the shank length, tie in a grizzly hackle of any type.
Use 3-4 peacock herls, according to hook size; make a rope with the thread, and wrap a nice full body.
Palmer the hackle up to the eye and tie off; wrap a small head; whip finish; cut thread; trim hackle to about 1/16" all around. _________________ At my age I'd rather have a talking frog.

I like. I also like the Wonder Wax in the background.
I am also a firm believer in Peacock Herl. |

I won't do it...wouldn't want to be taken for a cling-on. _________________ "Fishing doesn't actually happen. It just goes on in your head."

Neat, simple uncomplicated fly. Reminds me of a similar one which is nothing more than the peacock herl body with a couple wraps of dry fly. brown hackle at the front. Fished motionless in the surface film to imitate a snail. _________________ der Alte Jäger

Fred showed me that fly at the Pennsylvania GOTC, and gave me a couple (I think - maybe I got them at the auction/raffle) - they really work.
Thanks Fred!! _________________ Tight Lines,
